This years Cheakamus Challenge features the finest
courseon the planet for 2008 that will make you realize why this
race is the King of the Classics.
We will also be offering the Pique Cheakamus Lite
which features the last 40 km of the full course which begins at
noon at the Cal Cheak exit by the Whistler Bungee Bridge. This course
features many of the tough sections of the course and is a great
alternative for those looking for a solid 2-3 hour race.
Starting, as usual at 10 a.m, Saturday, September
20th at the Squamish Airport is the full pull which features over
70km. of riding over the full spectrum of terrain that will blow
you away.
With over 2000m of climbing and 40 km. of single-
track trails this course has it all with the Cheakamus River running
beside or below you for most of the duration.
This race is the classic point to point format with
big climbs, stunning views, high speed rolling terrain and of course
the classic Sea to Sky single-track.
For 08 the Pique Newsmagazine Cheakamus Light, features
a 40km. course that begins at Cal-Cheak Campsite at noon. This allows
beginners and juniors the opportunity to get their legs under them
if they are just starting out racing. You have to register under
the special category on www.karelo.com under the short course heading
on the category drop down. The Cheakamus Light also features most
of the major challenges of the day but allows you to do it with
about 30 km. less in your legs. Then next year you can do the full
course and use the experience gained to your advantage.
This years finish will be in Whistler Creek-side at
Dustys. With live music, great BBQ dinners for racers and
their friends along with some visual treats from the day of challenges.
This year Kokanee and Dustys will be taking
your number plates at the end of the race and exchanging them for
something much frostier. So remember to turn in your plate at the
finish this year and be dutifully rewarded.
The awards will also be at Dustys and will begin
at 5:00 p.m. There is tons of free parking just 50 m. from the finish
in Creekside. Kids and families are welcome to join in the festivities.
Course Changes
Last year we added over 8 km. of new single track
to the race course in our constant evolution. This new section is
500 m. up from the exit of TRASH and climbs up the Ridge Trail which
gains close to 300m. in elevation in 3.5 km. From this point it
is down past Loggerss Lake and up the Lucy in the Sky With
Diamonds Trail (Riverside) to the Black Tusk access road. You then
cruise down the road to Riverside Trail which you take down to the
landfill/Olympic Village bridge and turn 180 up Far Side to the
High Trail then up the Microwave Climb and down Tunnelvision. Once
out of Tunnelvision you climb the Kadenwood switch-backs and then
proceed down Big Timber to the finish at Dustys.
